Three years ago, longtime colleague Brian Knight, CEO of Pragmatic Works Software (PWS), and I had our first real conversation about the possibility of joining forces. We agreed that there was great potential, but the timing was not ideal – both companies were going through significant changes at the time – so we agreed to continue the conversation and keep the door open for the future.

Last fall, I brought the talented Bob Potter on board as CEO, and I rolled over to CTO. As an industry vet, Bob immediately understood the potential of an S1 + PWS combination. Bob also brought with him a wealth of experience with acquisitions, so the time seemed right to take another look.

Here we are, 6 months later, and I am incredibly excited to announce that S1 has completed the acquisition of PWS! The amazing PWS team will join S1, and they bring with them a suite of best-of-breed solutions for development, testing, documenting and monitoring the Microsoft Data Platform, including:

  • Task Factory: Over 60 SSIS components, including support for Azure Data Factory SSIS Integration Runtime
  • Workbench (a bundle of all products below)
    • BI xPress: Graphical Monitoring and Alerting for SSIS and SSRS; Comparison for SSIS packages, SSRS reports and SSAS cubes; Data Generation for SQL Server databases
    • DBA xPress: Data and Schema Comparison for SQL Server databases
    • LegiTest: Powerful Automated Unit Testing for SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS
    • DOC xPress: Comprehensive Documenter for SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS; robust Lineage and Impact Analysis; Metadata Management

A Compelling Combination

You may note that there is little overlap with existing S1 solutions – this is not coincidental. Sure, there have always been differences in focus and expertise between the orgs, with PWS more oriented around the BI stack and S1 the database engine, but equally as important, Brian and I have always intentionally avoided treading on each other's turf. This lack of redundancy makes for an unusually compelling combination.

To date, our focus has been (mostly) around monitoring and optimizing production assets in the data center and cloud. Aside from our popular free query tuning software, Plan Explorer, our story for the Microsoft database and BI developer has not been strong. PWS brings us significant depth and breadth around the development lifecycle, shifting us far to the left and enabling more comprehensive coverage of DevOps scenarios, with unique capabilities not seen elsewhere.

Special Offer for Existing Customers

To celebrate this fantastic union, we are offering a 90-day promotion for existing S1 and PWS customers. Click here for details.

What's Ahead

For the next few months, you won't see any significant changes to the PWS product lineup. Over time you will see some repackaging and rebranding of the PWS solutions as they are integrated into the S1 product portfolio, both on the desktop and in the S1 private and public cloud UIs.

It's important to note that the Pragmatic Works Consulting and Training organizations are unaffected by the PWS acquisition. S1 will continue to have a strong relationship with Pragmatic Works Consulting as a strategic partner.

Brian Knight is joining Kimberly Tripp, Paul Randal, and Christian Bolton on the S1 Advisory Board. Brian is committed to the success of the new company, and will remain heavily involved going forward.

It has taken a mountain of effort by S1, PWS and our investor, Mainsail Partners, to make this happen; my sincere thanks goes out to everyone involved. Together, we will continue our quest to empower Microsoft data professionals with the best solutions on the planet for developing, testing, documenting and monitoring the Microsoft Data Platform.
