If you have looked at ANY news report in the last two weeks, by now you know of the historic vote in the UK to leave the European Union (EU), also known as BrExit. This and yesterday's 4th of July Holiday in the US, or the celebration of Independence day, got me to thinking about why independence is so important to a person.

In the Declaration of Independence that helped to create the framework for the creation of the United States, Thomas Jefferson wrote about three fundamental natural rights, "life, liberty and the the pursuit of happiness." This is a very important concept for the independence of this new nation from outside control of the country and its people.

This is where I turned my thoughts away from the political concepts of independence and directed it internally. I regularly hear people talk about being more independent and having more control over the path and outcomes in their life. In other words, more control over their own personal "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." To do that, they must reclaim control over their own lives by eliminating or conquering something that is keeping them from truly being independent. This is where it gets hard.

Many people have challenges that keep them from having independence and control in their own lives. Some issues are easy to identify like money, influence, the right job, etc. But other are more difficult to define like low self esteem, mental and physical abuse or addiction.

We have to be honest with ourselves in the identification of what is holding us back to gain this independence. Once that is identified we can conquer it through education, support groups and our friends/families.

Rarely is it easy. Seldom can it be accomplished alone. Summon the inner strength. Muster your support forces. Claim your independence over those things in your life that is keeping you from your "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Make every day, Independence day!
